정 – Jeong Book with Phaidon
Jeong: The Spirit of Korean Craft and Design is the first internationally published book to present an immersive visual exploration of the Asian nation's fascinating craft and design scene. Jeong, a Korean word without a direct English translation, conveys affection and attachment formed over time, through care, and shared experiences. In craft and design, it is evident in material longevity, detail, and the bond between the maker, the object, and the user.
This book introduces the spirit of jeong to a global audience through 175 inspiring and important objects, from traditional to contemporary designs, including ceramics, furniture, textiles, lacquerware, embroidery, and more. Characterized by a unique blend of tradition and innovation, and a focus on sustainability and practicality, Korean design is recognized for its creativity, quality, and beauty as much as for its functionality.
This book celebrates anonymous folk crafts and everyday objects — such as bowls, baskets, and tools found in all Korean households — highlighting the artisanal skill embedded in the ordinary, alongside masterworks and modern innovations. Each piece is depicted with a striking full-page image. Featured works include hand-crafted traditional moon jars, intricately woven baskets, delicate textiles, and cutting-edge contemporary furniture. Highlighting the utilitarian element of Korean design, the objects are organized by use: Eating and Drinking; Housekeeping and Storing; Relaxing; Dressing; and Ritual, Playing and Decorating.
Printed on tactile craft paper and bound with exposed stitching in the traditional bookbinding style, the volume is designed as an object to be appreciated, like Korean design, for both its function and its beauty. Design-obsessed readers will also find in-depth essays by contemporary Korean design prodigy Teo Yang; curator Beth McKillop; and J Kathryn Hong, Chairperson of the Arumjigi Foundation.
